What happens during the Procedure of a testicular biopsy?
A testicular biopsy can be done to help find the cause of male infertility, but it is rare, contrary to popular belief, this test is generally not used to detect testicular cancer.
The testicular biopsy in Turkey is mostly performed for the purpose of obtaining sperm for in vitro fertilization for intracytoplasmic sperm injection.
It can be performed under local or general anesthesia, in the case where the biopsy is performed under general anesthesia, it is then essential to be on an empty stomach.
The procedure can be performed by a urologist or gynecologist. Two techniques are possible for the collection of spermatozoa:
Surgical route:
Through an incision in the scrotum, the surgeon will collect the tissue sample directly from the testicles, general anesthesia is used for this technique.
Epididymal puncture:
General anesthesia is not necessary for this procedure; it is often performed under local anesthesia, using an automatic gun, the sperm are taken between the testicles and the urethra.
If the sample is favorable for obtaining sperm, the latter are separated from the sperm plasma and then cryogenized, when the sample taken does not contain spermatozoa, it is then studied to define the most appropriate assisted reproduction technique.
What happens after the testicular biopsy?
Patients can return home the same day, a hematoma is observed as a result of this procedure. It is benign, and resolves after a few days.
It is normal to feel some discomfort or pain after the procedure; the doctor will give you the necessary medication and painkillers for that.
What are the results of a testicular biopsy?
The sperm obtained are used for intrauterine insemination or in vitro fertilization, these two techniques have very interesting success rates.
The laboratory studies of the tissues obtained by the testicular biopsy provide clarifications to the tests hitherto not convincing (spermogram, hormonal balance).
